Movie Presentations
Our feature presentation is entitled Quest For Energy. This 15 minute overview of the oil sands story highlights the geology, history, technology and future of oil sands development.

Oil Extraction Demonstration
A 10 minute demonstration showing how oil is extracted from the oil sand is presented to visitors. It is a simplified version of the hot water separation method used by commercial surface oil sand mining companies today. Visitors get an opportunity to see, smell and touch oil sand and it components: bitumen, sand and water.

Industrial Garden Guided Tour
Various equipment used by oil sands mining companies has been donated to the Centre for display in the Industrial Artifact Garden. We offer 30 minute guided tours of the Garden to visitors in the summer months.

Traveling Exhibits
The Centre hosts traveling exhibits two to three times a year for three to six week periods. The exhibits generally consist of various self-guided interactive activities and games geared toward a family audience. The exhibits are mainly of a science nature and are linked to an oil sands theme whenever possible.

Historic Abasand Walks
The Centre offers guided tours of Abasand Oils Limited, one of the earliest oil sands plants in the area. The tour consists of a two hour guided walk/hike to the remains of Historic Abasand, located approximately 10km from the Centre adjacent to the Abasand community of Fort McMurray.

The Badge Program
The Badge Program was created to aid in the encouragement of learning in young people involved in the Brownie and Guide Programs. We have developed specific programs that meet the requirements for badges as well as encourage further interest in the various themes of the badges. The programs include projects, crafts, games, and science activities as well as ample time for discussion.

Science Camps
The Centre offers a series of science camps for kids throughout the year. The camps focus on science based themes like space, the environment, or inventions.

Special Event Programs
The Centre organizes a number of special events throughout the year to help attract return visitors and to promote a variety of science based themes in a fun, hands-on learning environment. Examples of past events geared towards families include Dino Daze, Cosmic Quest, and LEGO Challenge. Adult interest programs have included Chemistry of Wine and the Aurora Borealis.

Discover Hunts
Little and Junior Scientists will love discovering the oil sands story using this exciting scavenger hunt that takes them through the exhibit hall and rewards them with a prize at the end.
