The
Oil Sands Discovery Centre
The
Oil Sands Discovery Centre in Fort McMurray is in the heart of the
world's biggest single oil deposit - Alberta's Oil Sands.
At the Centre you'll be surrounded by BIG things - a dragline bucket,
a 150 tonne heavy hauler with tires three metres high and "Cyrus,"
an 850 tonne bucketwheel excavator. You'll really get the "big picture"
when you see our big screen movie "Quest for Energy." Discover
us soon!
The
Centre opened in 1985 as the Fort McMurray Oil Sands Interpretive
Centre. The Centre is an educational facility committed to increasing
public awareness, appreciation and knowledge about the oil sands
industry. This is done by presenting and interpreting the history,
technology and significance of the industry and its role in the
development of Canada.
In
September 2002, a newly redeveloped exhibition gallery was opened.
It was created through donations by private companies, individuals
and the Alberta Government and by the hard work, dedication and
vision of advisory and fund raising committees and the former Friends
of the Oil Sands Discovery Centre.
The
Centre is a provincial facility, operated and maintained by the
Alberta government, Department of Culture and Community Spirit,
Historic Sites and Museums Branch.
Tours
of the oil sands industry are arranged by Fort McMurray Tourism.
